Before we had terms like Combatives or MMA, we had Capoeira as our established form of Street Defense.
It is said that the African people of Brazil created this martial art in the 16th century when they disguised combative training as games of dance and folklore.
Capoeira has many layers to its mysticism. Its practitioners gain nicknames to both empower and protect the student.
Deceptive strikes, sweeps, and takedowns are celebrated, and there is a strong connection between Capoeira, consciousness, and Afro-religions. Not to mention the inseparable presence of music.
The curriculum is widely immersive, covering combat, music, dance, and spirituality to an extent that takes lifetimes to explore.

Capoeiristas were often associated with trouble, frequently being contracted as Enforcers by gangs, Mobs, and the Military.
